    Miranda Addons (File Listing) Changelog

In this thread, I'll post changes that have been made to the FL. This is purely informational and any debate on the merits of the change can be put forth in a separate thread. The reason for this to keep all users/publishers informed as changes could have a drastic, possible detrimental psychological effect...

Ratings, Miranda Installer and XML Backends

All ratings for files have been disabled. Users will not be able to rate, nor will old ratings show. Ratings for user opinions still function though that might change in the near future. If ratings were to return, it will not be anonymous and credibility has to be factored in.

Miranda Installer support has been removed temporary. Its just a fix that saw the disabling enabled again accidentally some time back.

XML backends are now available too in bz2 compressed format.
For all developers, use this bz2 format. It'll save us alot of bandwidth. All youhave to do is decompress to get access to the xml format. At present, Updater plugin is using the new bz2 format now.

The backends are located in this location: http://miranda-im.org/download/backend (Note: you'll not be able to access this directory's contents)

    And the list:
    cat_customise.bz2
    cat_development.bz2
    cat_documentation.bz2
    cat_localisation.bz2
    cat_plugins.bz2
    cat_tools.bz2

    File Download Counts, Download Tracking

For many months now, there have been records of download count inflation. To improve the accuracy of download count records, the download tracking system has been modified.

From now, every user will have only 1 registered download record per file per version per type. I.e. If you download 5 times the binary file of the same version, only 1 record will be made. But if somehow later, a new file version is released and you download, a second and only record for this new version will be recorded. Same goes for source files etc. All this is valid within the weekly download count updating cycle.

(Tip to cheaters: You can keep downloading once per week to inflate your download count. Thats the most you can do assuming the file doesn't register new updates to raise the download count yourself)

All publishers who are obsessed with watching their download counts go up can be assured that the progression will be dramatically slower, and lower in general. In the past minutes, temporary records already reflect a large shower of duplicate records. So imagine...

    Top Downloads, Advanced Browsing

I've replaced Top Downloads on the main page with Most Popular Plugins.

Advanced Browsing has been pretty much neglected. Its currently the only section of the FL whose category management hasn't been ported over to the new system. As such, you might notice some categories missing.

Next ongoing work will be on Advanced Browsing, and browsing of files by publishers will be made possible.

    FL XML Backends

I've updated the category backends to use the new category structure. This should fix all related issues including Localisation xml backend.

The changes would break wassup, and as such, a new branch of xml backends have been created. Updater plugin might need to be updated too. All xml backends are named:

    http://miranda-im.org/download/backend/
    category_customise.xml
    category_development.xml
    category_documentation.xml
    category_localisation.xml
    category_plugins.xml
    category_tools.xml

To access the bz2 compressed backends, change the file extension to bz2.

Subsequent backends will be updated in the near future, including the 10 recent added/updated file lists.

    Summary/New XML Backends

XML backends have been improved, offering wider selection of feeds. Hopefully, unicode support is functioning properly too.

Currently, all XML Backends update once every 24 hours. Updating your data more than once every 24 hour is therefore a waste of our server resources. Please do no update more than once a day! The backends will be changed to reflect any changes as opposed to a routine/timely schedule in the next update for the backends.

    Backends all located at: http://miranda-im.org/download/backend/
    The new xml backends:
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    (1)
    category.xml
Lists the top level categories in the file listing with description. This is to facilitate any plugins/scripts etc. that wish to retrieve file listing data from the fl. You can retrieve this, and as with any top level category listed, a corresponding file list in xml format will be available.

    (2)
    category_customise.xml /cateory_customise.bz2
    category_development.xml /category_development.bz2
    category_documentation.xml /category_documentation.bz2
    category_localisation.xml /category_localisation.bz2
    category_plugins.xml /category_plugins.bz2
    category_tools.xml /category_tools.bz2
These xml backends lists all the files of each top-level category. If you are using these as data sets for your script/plugin, use the bz2 format as it saves us bandwidth. As with normal web browsing interface, whatever file is available on the public file listing is available in the backend. Vice versa.

    (3)
    frontpage_news.xml
If you don't visit the front page regularly for news updates, stay informed with this backend. It'll contain the latest 10 news items.

    (4)
    new_customise.xml
    new_development.xml
    new_documentation.xml
    new_localisation.xml
    new_plugins.xml
    new_tools.xml
These backends will contain the 15 newest additions to each of the top level categories.

    (5)
    upd_customise.xml
    upd_development.xml
    upd_documentation.xml
    upd_localisation.xml
    upd_plugins.xml
    upd_tools.xml
These backends will contain the 15 latest updates in each of the top level categories.

    (6)
    new_files.xml
This backend combines the 15 latest additions in any one of the top level categories.

    (7)
    upd_files.xml
This backend combines the 15 latest updates to any one of the top level categories.

    The old xml backends:
(If you are using/developing or have developed a plugin/script that uses any of the below mentioned backends, update(or inform the developer as a user) to use the new ones. These are not longer updating and will be removed in due course.)

The wassup plugin is an example of one using these old backends and will cease to function unless updated.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    cat_customise.xml
    cat_development.xml
    cat_documentation.xml
    cat_localisation.xml
    cat_plugins.xml
    cat_tools.xml
These have been replaced with (2). In addition, these had a few bugs which prevented all files from being included in the list.

    rss_add10.xml
This has been replaced with an improved backend (6).

    rss_upd10.xml
This has been replaced with an improved backend (7).

    rss_news10.xml
This has been replaced with an improved backend (3).

This was a late update, but nonetheless, better then never.
The File Listing has been moved to a brand new server provided by Neat Hosting. Response time, load capacities should all improve vastly.

A new/refreshed layout template has been implemented to better cope with the content-driven pages. Cross your fingers for more to come. This was a rushed implementation and it remains to be further optimised. If you liked the template, be assured our upcoming wiki is running this design too :).

I read all the posts in the "The New File Listing" thread so thanks for your feedback. The unicode/non-unicode builds etc. will all be dwelt with the same solution as to multiple files per entry. The new layout will be implemented when the server backend is redesigned for multiple files per entry.

In the meantime, you can contact me via PM or email (lyon at nortiq dot com) if you experience any issues needing my attention. Thanks!

    - Fixes in the User's Change E-mail Address function.
    - Multiple fixes in Search. Shouldn't get fatal errors now.
    - Boolean mode completely removed. Boolean mode doesn't allow sorting by relevance, and relevance is manipulated to bring certain results higher in the result list. Non alphabet/number characters will be automatically removed as it doesn't aid in the search process.
    - New Splash Screen category

    - New method to check the file type for binary and source file. You should be able to use any browsers to upload files. Let me know if you have any problem uploading files. Standard rules apply, only ZIP files are allowed.
