Basic text formatting in IM messages

Hi,
I was wondering if there's any way to enable *basic* /text/ formatting in messages (just for myself, I'm not interested in formatting being sent to whoever I'm talking to). Ie turning *this* text into bold etc. I found the Text Format plugin, but this hasn't been updated since 2003, and although Miranda recognises it when I copy the contents of the zip file into the plugins/ directory (ie in Options -> Plugins), it doesn't work (ie when I type *hello* world, the 'hello' isn't bolded).
