The Miranda File Transfer UI Discussion

Side-by-side with the Opts dialog discussion, I would like to share and know your opinions also about a FT dialog "revolution".

I haven't seen such thread somewhere, please tell me if I'm wrong :) So what's my opinion? Well... Nullbie has surely made a good code work, yes, it is also nice that he brought something.."new" :) But (this is nothing persnonally against him) when I firstly saw this update on the SVN - I've stayed stuck in a shock. Wow, looks like someone needs to clear his screen from dialogs or what :) I have no idea how many file transfers can some people gain per hour/day/week, but... Generally, FTs over IM networks often fails, and I don't think anyone here is capable to make about 50 FTs per day to say that his screen is really full of dialogs x) I don't say this one is bad, but... From one side, this solution is "complexive", not simple, easier, and TRADITIONAL, what's happed with our "smaller, easier, ..."? x) And on the other side, this solution is too lightened, it misses the information value of the old sulution. That's what poped in my mind in the first moment. What about an OPTIONALITY? I don't use my instant messenger as a Swiss knife (one application for everything) nor as a download manager, so I would never fill in more than 2 items in this "list". Yeah, it looks cool in FireFox when we compare it against IE, but... Web browser is secondarily designed for storing content, right? FTs in IMs is only a deluxe service, I think so. This is why I'm using the old module/solution in my SVN builds, I really don't plan to use it somewhere as a dedicated application for sharing files with people via IM networks :) I'm trying to keeps this old module's code actual, but it won't be possible for an infinite time.

What is your opinion about this turnover?

P.S.: Looks like it's too late now, but... If possible... Bring us the old FT system back x) Or give us some option. It would be welcome :) Thanks

To me it seems work on it started and then abandoned. There have been many posts about the new FT dialog in past builds discussions, but they remained as such - talk between users and zero intervention from any of the "higher devs" and this is why it looks the way it looks.

It also doesn't help that there are untouched bug reports (yeah yeah don't anyone get started with "learn to code/get vc/free software-so-you-can't-complain auto responses ;).

A few suggestions that can combine the two:
    - Allow to control the height and width of the window and remember window size, this way a user could adjest the window size as was previously. This will help migration from one dialog to another to those who prefer differently.

    - Add a button to each transfer row that upon clicking will show extra information about the specific transfer. This information could be what that is missing from the screen shot on the right (from who is the transfer, save location, etc) or whatever - open to discussion...

My personal problem with this file transfer dialog is the step before the file transfer dialog. ...
YES, I talk about this annoying blinking tray icon!
And NO, accept files from anyone or from users in the CL is not really the solution.
Apart from my dream that all blinking tray icons should replace with a message box, the handling for file transfers are more annoying.
1)Someone try to send me a file
2)I must watch at the blinking tray icon
3)I must hit it and the transfer dialog opens.
4)BBBAAAHHH please not this file! Where is the cancel button? :|

    Why not the other way?
1)Display the File transfer dialog immediately (maybe with a choice foreground or background window position)
2)add a "accept" button for each file transfer.

But, I must admit, I am not file sharing user, normally I have 5 file transfers or less in one week.

well options I have seen suggested already and like to see them implemented:
    1) ability to display FT window minimized
    2) ability to close if transfer is complete
    3) ability to accept files form everyone.

On annoying thing in Ft atm is that if you are playing any game or writing somthing the Ft dialog pops up even if you have select auto-acept :-(.

My blinking Icon disappears after 3 seconds and I dont realise that someone wanted to send me a file oO And the completed transfers are automatically removed from the list - without hitting the button which should do it <.<

I miss progressbar of individual files during multiple-files FT. Other thing I would like to have is FT "reset" button, or icon, to reset file transfer, if some error occure during FT, or during initialization.

I'd like it to stop crashing the kernel when I click the X (Cancel) icon... :-(

Personally I've patched the sources locally to allow a small dialog and more condensed individual displays.

I'd still prefer the Yahoo Messenger style (transfers show inside the message log, at the bottom) or the SlimBrowser page loading-style (mini-progressbars on respective tabs).

The only solution for FT which would make me happy would be to be able to include FTs in the TabSRMM window as another TAB.... I just hate many open windows popping up and having to close them down.... old FireFox 2.x had plugin for this feature and it was the most usefull thing (new FireFox3 doesn't). I know a lot of people would disagree, so it should ofcourse, be optional....

    regards,
    Dalibor

    I'd prefer inline notification too

but even if not make inline notification clickable so you can set auto accept and then just click the notification to open that file...
I hate to go explorer/miranda-folder/received files/ ... which icq uin was it again?

maybe even make 2 clickable links like open file and open folder

or... fake contacts that show the progress ...

I don't need more windows ... more windows means more window switching and that means more keyboard or mouse interaction and mouse is way worse then keyboard anyway 'specially on a notebook so please do hot-keys too

and I like the blinking tray icon as a notificator I don't have popups because I don't like them... I like miranda as try icon blinks if anything happens and nothing else pops up just by itself

except msn chats (but that's another story)
