    [MSN] Avatar Compression

Only today I've noticed that Miranda compresses any avatar image that I set in a png format with some criterion that it decides for me.
And if I set a png file, Miranda re-compresses it, damaging the image (very visible in black and white highly-contrasted pictures).
    How can I avoid this?

Could it be related to the alpha channel that official pnd2dib discards when it compresses any image to png?
You may try the one that I modified to handle properly alpha channel when compressing. see there

    I have opposite question:
Is there some special reason the avatars that are received in MSN to be always decompressed to BMPs? AFAIK avatars come as PNGs. Isn't it better to keep them in the format they come?

I think that he means why all MSN avatars are resized to 96x96 pixels. Afaik it is a protocol limitation.

    No, I mean this:

On the left how Miranda have re-compressed the image, to the right the image saved in png format from photoshop.
See the antialiasing on the borders? The number of colors (in this case grays) is diminished, messing out the image.
And it is not an alpha channel problem, there isn't.

The problem is what I said... also in the case of an image that perfectly maches the protocol specifications (png 8-bit - 96x96 px) Miranda recompresses it.

Yes, it does, because of some "internals". Are you using my details or MSN directly?

the image does match the protocol .. but does it match the max Avatar size setting in Miranda? set that to 96x96 and it'll match (most likely)

No, it won't. That is the exact point that Sitalk is making.

I was using My Details... setting the avatar from the MSN protocol menu works perfectly, no image damage at all. Thanks!
